Medical Technician

The Medical Technician performs technical work in one or more areas such as chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, phlebotomy, rapid testing or microbiology. The work requires a practical knowledge of the techniques of medical laboratory practice in one or more areas of clinical laboratory work, and of the chemistry, biology, and anatomy involved. The major duties include but are not limited to:
Conducts any or all of the following tasks related to specimens - performs collection, ensures accurate and complete labeling and accessioning, distributes to appropriate areas of the lab, runs through centrifuge and de-capping machines, and stores analyzed specimens in racks according to day and lab number; Processes specimens through primary analyzers in chemistry, hematology, serology, rapid testing, and coagulation; Conducts the following testing:
B-hcg, sedimentation rate, Flu PCR, STREP, point-of-care/ancillary testing (e.g. glucose, BNP, Troponin, Blood Gas, and PT-INR by handheld devices); Recognizes erroneous lab results and makes appropriate clinical decisions based on these results; Performs routine maintenance on analyzer and monitors quality control system following established guidelines; Reports/verifies results for rapid testing area and reference lab; Maintains appropriate certification for packaging and shipping hazardous/biological specimens; Researches test methods and specimen requirements for rarely requested assays and provides necessary assistance on test performance or special studies; Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, which influence test results; Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the work space; Maintains laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies in such a manner as to provide for safety and efficiency of laboratory operations; Keeps complete and accurate records of all test results - strictly adheres to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA); Provides clerical support in various areas of the laboratory, the central receiving area, reference area, and in the outpatient blood draw lab; and, Performs all other duties as assigned. There are two (2) locations for the Medical Technician vacancies. Applicants will have the opportunity to select one or both locations when completing the Assessment Questionnaire. Below are the locations and the Work Schedules for the two locations:

You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to perform the duties of this position. AND In addition to the English Language Proficiency, to qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
Experience:
You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a phlebotomist. NOTE:
Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR Education:
Successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the Medical Technician position which may include clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum, or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as listed above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Medical Technician position such as clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum, or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
